José Maria Marin passed away

José Maria Marin, former president of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) and ex-governor of São Paulo, passed away on July 20, 2025, in São Paulo at the age of 93. Marin began his political career in the 1970s and briefly served as São Paulo’s governor before moving into football administration, where he led the CBF from 2012 to 2015. His tenure was marred by controversy when he was arrested in 2015 as part of the global FIFA corruption scandal, later convicted in the U.S. on charges including racketeering and money laundering. He was sentenced to four years in prison but released early in 2020 due to health concerns. Marin’s legacy remains deeply controversial, reflecting both his political prominence and his central role in one of football’s biggest corruption cases.
